Nervous About IV Sedation? Here’s What It Actually Feels Like.

The words “IV sedation” don’t exactly sound relaxing. You picture a needle in your arm. You picture losing control. Maybe you picture waking up groggy and disoriented. For some people, the fear of sedation dentistry is actually worse than the fear of the procedure itself.

Dr. Campbell and Dr. Rafetto hear this every day at Oral Facial Surgery of Delaware. And they understand. That’s why they take extra time to explain exactly what IV sedation feels like: before, during, and after. So let’s walk through it together. Step by step.

Nervous About IV Sedation Dentistry? in Delaware

Before the Procedure: The Prep

You’ll arrive at our office and check in. A member of our clinical team will guide you to a comfortable treatment room. You’ll get settled in the chair. One of our nurses will place a small monitor on your finger to track your heart rate and oxygen levels. You’ll also have a blood pressure cuff on your arm. This is standard safety protocol. We monitor you constantly from start to finish.

Then comes the part most people worry about: the IV. The poke is quick. It feels like a small pinch. Once the tiny catheter is in place, you won’t feel it anymore. Most patients are surprised by how little it actually hurts.

During the Procedure: The Float

Once the IV is in, Dr. Campbell or Dr. Rafetto will start the sedation medication. You won’t feel a sudden “rush” or anything dramatic. Instead, you’ll notice a warm, pleasant feeling spreading through your body. You’ll start to feel deeply relaxed.

Within a minute or two, you’ll enter a state called conscious sedation. That’s a fancy term for “awake enough to respond, but too relaxed to care.”

During the procedure, you’ll be able to breathe on your own. You’ll respond to simple instructions like “open wider” if we need you to. But you won’t feel anxious. You won’t feel pain. And you definitely won’t be counting down the minutes.

Many patients describe it as “taking a lovely nap.” You close your eyes. Maybe you drift off. And when you wake up, the hard part is already over.

After the Procedure: The Wake-Up

When the procedure is finished, we’ll stop the sedation medication. Within a few minutes, you’ll start to wake up gradually.

You won’t be groggy for hours like you would be with general anesthesia. IV sedation wears off relatively quickly. Most patients feel alert enough to go home within 30 to 45 minutes after the procedure. That said, you will need someone to drive you home. The medication stays in your system long enough to make driving unsafe. Plan ahead and bring a friend or family member.

You might feel a little tired or forgetful for the rest of the day. That’s normal. Just take it easy, drink fluids, and rest. By the next morning, you’ll feel back to yourself.
